Disk Inventory X has a better visual look, but I find it a little easier to drill down into folders with WhatSize. Just personal preference.

Um, I'm not so sure you really want to delete those folders. They contain the support files needed for iDVD and GarageBand. Things like themes, templates, loops, and tutorials. The applications will work without them, however you might want to leave them there.
It's okay to remove them if you don't use the apps.
The only iLife app I use regularly is iPhoto, so the first thing I do after any install of OS X or purchase of a new mac is to archive the iLife apps and support files and then delete them. That way if I ever have need for any of them, I can simply copy them to my HD and go.

Utilities like Disk Inventory X and GrandPerspective are very useful. I highly recommend them to anyone concerned with where all their disk space went (I use Disk Inventory X myself). Particularly useful when asked to diagnose disk space problems on other people's computers: easily and intuitively find out what's consuming the most space without tedious size comparisons or unnecessary purges of innocent files.
It has to be pointed out that if you've installed iLife in the past, previous versions may have left ANOTHER folder that big.
I to, did a disk inventory (I think I used WhatSize) and discovered two folders. Using the folder dates I deleted the oldest ones and it seems to have worked fine.
Of course, if you don't need GarageBand or iDVD - delete them both. I deleted the iDVD stuff (and the duplicates) as I don't have a DVD burner.

Although there's no quick way to do this, that I know of, if you DO use iDVD, and want to claim a few hundred MB, you can go in each .theme file (control-click, 'show package contents') and search for the 'PAL' versions and delete those (if you're in North America -- visaversa, if you're not).

Many thanks for this cue! I was short in space on my PowerBooks' HD: only 5/100Gb was remaining, but this little app was very useful for the 'slimming cure' operation of the disc. OMG! I was about to buy another HD (a Seagate Momentus 160Gb) and make the big swap. Fortunately I read this post and Disk Inventory X helped me to retrieve practically 20Gb! It surely deserve a donation.
